Wine journalist Monica Larner will be the guest of honor on June 1, 2014 during the presentation of the newly released “King” of wines, Barolo 2010. The presentation opens a week of wine tasting completely dedicated to Barolo from June 1-7.

The traditional event held by the Regional Enoteca of Barolo “Meet the Vintage” ("Un'Annata alla Vostra Attenzione") returns this year on June 1 and lasts for a week. This year’s Barolo vintage is from 2010, presented to fine wine lovers and those working in the wine sector by the very wine makers who produce them and presented by the renowned Monica Larner. Larner is the Italian Reviewer for The Wine Advocate (founded by Robert Parker), and one of the wine world’s most influential voices.

The Official Barolo 2010 Selection by the Regional Enoteca of Barolo

The Technical Committee recently met to perform the complicated and challenging task of assessing the 20 samples of Barolo 2010 chosen for the event. They had to identify the most representative Barolo wines to make the cut for the “Official Selection,” which will be covered with an anonymous cap and label and used as bottles for institutional events and demonstrations within the Enoteca.

Now that the selection process is complete, the next task is given to the artist selected to design the anonymous wine label. After such big names as Beverly Pepper, Park Eun Sun, Mikhail Shemyakin, Kyoji Nagatani and Joe Tilson, Turin-based artist Ezio Gribaudo will put his own talent to the test, creating a label that represents the 2010 vintage. With the artistic drafts already seen, it seems that this year the label will have a delicate and evocative touch to it.

The Event

The event for the Barolo 2010 vintage will be officially inaugurated on Sunday, June 1 at 11:00 am at the “Temple of the Wine Tourist,” (“Tempio dell’Enoturista”) located within the premises of the Falletti Castle of Barolo. Monica Larner will be presenting the vintage, after which the grand week of Barolo tasting kicks off, with the Enoteca open every day except Wednesday.

President of the Regional Enoteca of Barolo, Federico Scarzello, says, “We’re pleased to host an important expert of the wine world that demonstrates the same passion and professionalism that animates our own producers, helping them to sustain the high quality and prestige of Barolo. After welcoming the presence of 2010 World Sommelier Champion Luca Gardini, Italian wine writer and critic of international acclaim Ian d’Agata, and the “queen” of wine writers Jancis Robinson, we are happy to bring yet again an international appeal to this event with Monica Larner. Ms. Larner is a journalist of high expertise, known in the wine industry as Italian correspondent for Wine Enthusiast and Italian Reviewer for The Wine Advocate, selected last year by Robert Parker."

President Scarzello continues, “In just a few days, our producers will have decided whether or not they will participate and we will be able to publish the names of wineries and labels present. You will be able to see them on Facebook and Twitter, as well as on our website www.enotecadelbarolo.it, which, I might add, after just one year since its start has seen enormous success and hundreds of visits every day. The week of tasting and presenting Barolo 2010 will also be a chance for us to introduce our renovations to the public, which we underwent in order to create a more captivating and efficient space when hosting such big events as this Barolo 2010 tasting. The re-imagined interior also serves to present itself as a young, lively center where Barolo is still, and always will be, the center of attention in this part of Piemonte."

Harvest and Agricultural Year for the 2010 Vintage

(by the Grand Master of the Dynastic Order of Barolo, oenologist Armando Cordero)

2010 was characterized by a particularly long and frigid winter. The heavy snowfalls provided important water reserves in the soil, which, together with the temperatures in April and May, fostered an excellent germination and vigor in all the vines in the area. The beginning of summer was characterized by abundant rainfall, sometimes very intense, and some hail, though light and mild.

The beginning of August saw moderate temperatures, altogether lower than in previous years, hinting at the late maturation of the grapes. During the last ten days of August and in September, daily temperatures increased with an excellent day-night temperature range, which fundamentally contributed to the grapes’ characteristics, especially with the polyphenolic content. This was particularly evident in the late-ripening varieties.

As for overall grape health, the year was challenging and complex for vine growers, who had to intervene in a timely and precise manner to avoid an attack of cryptogam organisms.

The Nebbiolo variety really enjoyed September, when the beautiful weather compensated for the late maturation brought about by the abundant rainfall between July and August. During the second half of the month, sugar content grew constantly and the acid level decreased to optimum levels. Finally, the phenolic components, essential to guarantee a fine body and good aging potential, matured to perfect results. Once again, Nebbiolo responded to the climate in such a way to demonstrate that the Langhe is its unique, ideal, and irreplaceable natural habitat.
