The Mole, National Cinema Museum & bicerin. Turin Epicurean Capital The Mole, National Cinema Museum & bicerin. Turin Epicurean Capital

Turin is a city of internationally important museums, elegant porticoes, Art Nouveau facades, and centuries of history. It is also a mecca for excellent wine and food, for which the Turin Epicurean Capital event will hold three days of round tables, shows, and more during the first week of September 2014.

That Turin’s enogastronomic culture is so distinguished may come as a surprise, as the typical Torinese comportment is understated. Indeed, the cuisine and fine wines are not loudly trumpeted outside of Piemonte-conscious circles: bicerin, the chocolate, espresso, and whipped cream drink; tajarin, fine, thin, fresh egg pasta served with ragù or butter and sage; carne cruda, agnolotti, the myriad of cheeses; Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera, need we list all its excellent wines? A slice of this food and wine culture will be introduced, discussed, and tasted during the first week of September in Turin.

Turin native Lucia Hannau is spearheading the Turin Epicurean Capital event on September 2, 3, and 4, 2014. The three-day affair will be hosted in English and Italian to encourage wine lovers and foodies from all over to attend or follow along on social media. Participants include twenty guests from authors, writers and actors to bloggers, entrepreneurs, and journalists.

The program will consist of round tables in the mornings and food and literature events in the afternoons. The round tables will be the epicenter of conversations about points of view, philosophies, and discussion of the universal meaning of food, with anecdotes and personal stories of how it has affected the lives and careers of the participants.

Each day, the round tables will have a different group of participants. Diana Zahuranec of Wine Pass will be attending the morning discussion on September 2, together with Sandra Salerno, the acclaimed food blogger of Turin with Un tocco di zenzero; Fabio Geda, a Turin-born writer and novelist; Andrea Lee, an American writer and author living in Turin; and Elena Kostioukovitch, a Russian author and translator. Follow along on social media with the hashtag #TurinEpicureanCapital.

The food and literature events in the afternoons include readings, a theatrical show, a documentary, and a Piemontese cooking class where the chefs – participants and public alike – get to enjoy their meals at the end.

Notice, after a quick scroll through the participants’ page, that these are people of high regard and prestige in their fields, widely read online or in books, publicly visible in documentaries and shows, and well-connected to a reader- or viewership. Lucia’s guiding principle in the organization of Turin Epicurean Capital has been to put the city on the international foodie map. She wants travelers to see how rewarding a visit to Turin is, particularly for those with a wine and food edge, and the rich experience that a traveler can enjoy under its porticoed sidewalks.
