The truffle hunter's best friend
When autumn arrives, the unmistakable aroma of truffles hangs on the air throughout the lower Langhe and in the Asti and Monferrato zones. Truffle fairs, from local to international, are some of the most anticipated events of mid- to late autumn.
It is only fitting that the noble wines of Piemonte have one of the world’s most expensive and gourmet foods to pair it with (expensive, yes, though truffle lovers may rejoice at this year’s unexpected bounty: Italian White Truffle Lovers Celebrate Bumper Harvest). Often, these truffle fairs go hand-in-hand with local food and wine events.
October and November are two peak periods for harvesting the Tuber magnatum Pico – commonly known as the White truffle of Alba or Piemonte – and several species of black truffles. In fact, there is an official calendar for the raccolta, or harvest, of truffles in Piemonte with a complete set of rules, just like hunting for anything in the wild. But unless you’re a truffle hunter yourself, the truffle fairs, festivals, and sagras are the best opportunities for finding high quality specimens of this underground truffle.
