From May 10 to 12, come to the XIII edition of the event dedicated to Barbera, the Lady in Red

Thousands of wine lovers, 50 wineries, and three days of festivities make up this year's 13th edition of “Nizza is Barbera.” At Nizza Monferrato, everything is ready for this event dedicated to the Lady in Red, organized by the Regional Wine Shop of Nizza and the Municipality of Nizza Monferrato with the support of the Piedmont Region, the Consortium for the Tutelage of Asti and Monferrato wines, and the Chamber of Commerce of Asti. From Friday, May 10 to Sunday, May 12, the Foro Boario in Piazza Garibaldi will become center stage for a series of events that will transform the city into a capital of wine.

Barbera&Glasses

Following tradition, the three day event will be kicked off by “Barbera&Glasses” at 5:00 pm, an awards ceremony of Barbera d'Asti DOCG producers cited in the Italian Wines 2013 guide by Gambero Rosso as wines that earned Three Glasses, the highest recognition; as Great Wines in the Slow Wine 2013 guide by Slow Food; and crowned with Five Grapes by the guide Bibenda 2013, produced by AIS, the Italian Sommelier Association. The guest of honor this year is Barolo, and throughout the day on Friday, the Wine Shop will propose more than 100 labels of noble red wines made from Nebbiolo. From 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, it will be possible to purchase a tasting session of Barolo (3 different wines for 5 euro or 7 for 10 euro, wine glass included).

Barbera Hour

Barbera Hour begins at 7:00 pm, the Italian-style “happy hour” called aperitivo that will be held in the historical center. Enjoy cocktails made with Barbera in a competition for the best drink. The evening closes with a show by Ivana Bertoletti, “Beyond the dark,” at the Theatre dell'Oratorio Don Bosco at 9:30 pm. Beginning Saturday, wine lovers will have the possibility to discover the flavors and enjoy the countryside of this beautiful territory of Barbera. The heart of the event is at the Foro Boario center, where, from 5:00 to 9:00 pm, the wines of Barbera DOCG and Barbera d'Asti Superiore from 50 different producers will be available for tasting. For just 5 euros, buy a wine glass with the engraved logo of the event – a special souvenir – to taste these 50 participating wines.

Art, Territory, and Food

The event continues Sunday from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. At the Foro Boario Sunday, enjoy the display that is the fruit of a collaboration with the CRE[AT]IVE Association, who gave life to a project representing art and territory for a socially and culturally important show. This year as in the past, enjoy traditional gastronomic specialties, local and artisanal, by the Streetfood Association. The different cuisines are from all over Italy – Abruzzo, Sicily, Emilia Romagna, Tuscany, Campania, Piedmont – and abroad. Taste such delicious foods as il kürtőskalács, a typical dessert from Transylvania, and Anglo Saxon Jacket Potatoes. Available Saturday from 7:00 pm to midnight, and Sunday from noon to 10:00 pm.

The Markets and the Siege

As if the specialties from the Streetfood weren't enough, food pairings at the Foro Boario will also be served, including Ligurian specialties from the association Mare e Mestieri of Laigueglia. In addition, from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm Sunday, the open air agricultural market of Slow Food, Kilometer Zero, will be selling products. Finally, enjoy the “Barbera Party,” a “white night” (notte bianca) when shops and bars stay open all night long on Saturday; and Sunday, Nizza will be celebrating its 400th anniversary of the Siege of the City that occurred May 12-24, 1613, with a historical reenactment throughout the city center. The grand Dinner of the Siege closes the three days of festivities at 8:00 pm Sunday evening.
