Decanter World Wine Awards and IWSC: Piedmont wins 12 gold medals in one of the world's most prestigious wine competitions
Italy wins 28 gold medals in the wine Olympics, the Decanter World Wine Awards. In London at the annual awards ceremony of Decanter at the London International Wine Fair, May 20-22 ,2013. Piedmont, the king of Barolo, was crowned with the highest number of gold medals for any single typology of wine. The Savoy region, however, is the runner-up for total medals received in Italy with a total of seven, first place being Tuscany with 14 prestigious recognitions. Following are Veneto and Sardinia with two labels, and Abruzzo, Umbria, and Sicily with one each.
Piedmont confirms its reputation for being a land of absolute wine excellence, where Barolo is still in the lead for international wine drinkers, and the wine for which Piedmont is best-known. Total gold medals for the "Bel Paese" have, overall, lowered from 31 to 28. From Piedmont's paltry earnings in 2012, winning not a single gold award, seven top awards in 2013 is quite an accomplishment. Piedmont also won four Regional Trophies, recognizing important Italian labels, wineries, and bottlers; Italy as a whole won 15 (winning 6 in 2012).
During the London fair, Piedmont won other recognitions, as well. The IWSC awards (International Wine and Spirits Competition) was held contemporaneously with the Decanter awards, another awards ceremony dedicated to tracking down and awarding the best wines in the world. Five Barolo and Barbaresco wines won the gold, Luigi Arnulfo, Damiliano, Ascheri, and Marchesi di Gresy.
