Truffles aren't the only thing perfuming the air in the Piemonte hills this fall. In Asti on November 22, Bagna Cauda Day comes to town with a strong whiff of garlic, a fun event that will leave you waiting with, well, bated breath.
From November 22-24, the ABCD event (Asti Bagna Cauda Day) returns to Asti, making the city the capital of this strong, savory vegetable dip. Bagna cauda is a Piemontese specialty and tradition made from extra virgin olive oil and/or, and lots of anchovies and garlic, served hot over a flickering candle. Maybe you haven't heard of it yet, but bagna cauda has become more popular in recent years, even making its way to Japan (which is only fitting, as it is the country of umami, the sixth taste of savory)
The Bagna Cauda Day is a wonderfully odorious (odorous + glorious) three days of festival. Dozens of restaurants and locales in Asti get involved, and buses full of tourists come in from Turin, Milan, and Genova.
To the background of the mouth-watering bagna cauda aroma is wine, sold by the €5 bottle by wineries and restaurants taking part in ABCD. The selection ranges from classic varieties like Barbera, Freisa, and Grignolino, to younger wines; all of them are ideal to pair with bagna cauda.
Don't miss out on the all-inclusive package for a bagna cauda meal at one of the participating restaurants. The all-in-one price includes a special menu at any of the restaurants, dessert, and caffè. Those who opt for the ticket will also receive a recipe booklet with traditional bagna cauda dishes edited by the local newspaper Astigiano, with anecdotes, stories, and quotes, plus a large napkin to use during dinner and take home as a souvenir for your first "Bagna Cauda Day."
Get ready for one of the tastiest events of the season!
