On Saturday and Sunday September 27-28, 2014, the capital of spumante will transform into an open-air wine bar for the Canelli, Città di Vino manifestation. Visitors can enjoy wine tastings, visits to historical wineries, and encounters that present the UNESCO-recognized territory and all it has to offer. New to this year’s annual event is the Canelli Wine Card, which will include several wine tastings and discounts during the course of the event.

A city decked out in full festival attire with wine tastings at every corner, guided visits to the historical wine cellars known as “Underground Cathedrals,” music, thematic exhibitions, and a new Wine Card to enjoy discounts and tastings: this is Canelli, City of Wine. From Saturday 27 to Sunday 28, this town in Asti wine territory, the capital of sparkling spumante, will become an open-air enoteca.

Organized by the City Hall of Canelli and the Regional Enoteca of Canelli and Astesana, Canelli’s “City of Wine” event reaches its 16th edition this year. Moreover, 2014 is an important year for the Moscato wine hills, as Canelli’s Underground Cathedrals and its Asti DOCG wine zone were recently inserted in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Canelli’s grand weekend of wine tasting will celebrate Bacchus’s favorite drink and the centuries-old enological history in its town, opening the doors of many wineries and historical palazzi. Walk from door to door to enjoy samples of delicious cuisine served alongside the best wine labels of the area. “Guest” territories Trentino Alto Adige, Aosta Valley, and Lombardy will present their wines, as well.

Beyond the food and wine extravaganza, dozens of associated events will take place, from stands along Via Roma to vintage car shows, from musical shows to costumed spectacles, and from exhibits to fun and games for children.

New for the 16th edition of City of Wine is the Canelli Wine Card. This pass was created for those who want to enjoy all of the event’s wine, food, and cultural offerings. Purchasable at marked points throughout the city and at the Tourism Office (Ufficio del Turismo) for just €10, the Canelli Wine Card gives its holder three wine tastings and discounts of up to 40% for the winery visits to the Underground Cathedrals of Bosca, Contratto, Coppo, and Gancia. Those who buy the card can keep the wine glass as a souvenir.

Canelli, City of Wine will be inaugurated on September 26 in Teatro Balbo (via Partigiani). At 9 pm, enjoy the grand show and concert of Music, Wine, and Territory performed by the musical bands of the city.

On Saturday, September 27 from 3:00, wine tastings and winery visits take off. For two days, pass by Tosti (Via Roma, 103) to taste their wines, liquors, and amari; and the City Hall courtyard (Via Roma, 34) for drink and cocktails prepared with Pernod Ricard Italia. Visit Palazzo Riccadonna (Corso Libertà, 29) with its wines from Cascina Castlet and liquors of the historical Liquorieria (“Liquorie”) Mainardi; and the Tourism Office (Via G.B. Giuliani, 21) to taste Moscato d’Asti DOCG “Canelli,” Barbera d’Asti DOCG, and Asti Hour cocktails Asti Spumante and fruit. In piazza Cavour there will be the 4th edition of “Terre di Moscato” with Moscato d’Asti DOCG tastings hosted by Produttori Moscato d’Asti. During all of this, don’t forget that the Underground Cathedrals are open with tastings, too! And from 9:00 pm, enjoy music along the streets and piazzas of the city.

On Sunday, September 28, the event continues in the same festive spirit, with guided visits and wine tastings. In Piazza Cavour, there will be a parade for the end of the harvest, “Fine Vendemmia,” and don’t miss the historical reenactment of the feudal lord Manfredi Lancia and his daughter Bianca. A vintage car show will be held in Piazza Zoppa.

During both days of the event, a celebratory train will pass through Canelli, symbolic of the arrival of the train for the first time to the city 150 years ago. It will connect the wineries to the various event locations.

Finally, don’t miss the exhibitions in many of the tasting areas: the Multimedia Museum of Southern Asti Territory and the farmers’ museum in Via Giuliani; the international exhibit of spumante in the Bosca winery; the vermouth and aromatized wine exhibit in Palazzo Riccadonna; and the performance of traditional crafts and trades in Gancia winery and in Piazza Cavour.
