Barolo Auction Barolo Auction

Preparations are in full swing for the highlight event of the Barolo season taking place on May 10 and 11, 2014 in the splendid setting of the Falletti Castle.

The Barolo Auction ("Asta del Barolo) is ready to thump its gavel and bring the “king of wines” to the world. This year, the annual event takes place on Saturday, May 10 and Sunday, May 11, held by Accademia del Barolo, the association composed of twelve of the most prestigious wineries in the Langhe. These wineries are: Azelia, Cordero di Montezemolo, Damilano, Franco M. Martinetti, Luciano Sandrone, Michele Chiarlo, Paolo Scavino, Poderi Gianni Gagliardo, Poderi Luigi Einaudi, Pio Cesare, Prunotto and Vietti. For years, they have worked side by side to promote the territory through its top expression, Barolo DOCG.

The weekend program will have two parts. The first, on Saturday, May 10, is the Dinner of Accademia del Barolo at the starred restaurant La Ciau del Tornavento in Treiso, managed by Maurilio Garola and Nadia Benech. The producers from Accademia del Barolo will present their greatest Barolo vintages and let diners taste Barolo 2010, the latest vintage on the market today. It is possible to participate in the dinner upon reservation until the maximum number of diners is filled.

The second part of the program takes place on Sunday, May 11 when the auction goes live. At 11:00 am, the fifteenth edition of the Barolo Auction begins in the splendid setting of the Barolo Castle. This year, the auctioneer will be the versatile Marco Berry, a noted television figure, applauded illusionist, and excellent escape artist who will be calling exceptional lots at the auction. These include historical vintages and magnums of Barolo from the producers of Accademia del Barolo. International auction participants include Singapore, Dubai, and Hong Kong, thanks to live video, and more guests from around the world are expected. This year, charity is also given special time. Two incredible lots consisting of 6 magnums of Barolo coming from 12 wineries of Accademia will be bid, and the entire earnings will be donated to La Collina degli Elfi in Govone (CN) and to Marco Berry Onlus – Magic for Children.

Following is the Auction Lunch, prepared by the Alajmo brothers, chefs of Le Calandre, a three-starred restaurant in Sarmeola di Rubano. The restaurant is famous for its “poetic” renditions of dishes and can be found in the guide The World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

The lots that have been disclosed to date are divided into three categories: the bottles from the wineries of Accademia Barolo, for a total of 19 lots; 3 lots from the private collections of Friends of Accademia del Barolo; and finally, the institutional lot (which will be divided into 2 parts) containing 12 magnums of Barolo, one from each winery.
